Dominic Kavanagh

They built a monument with all our bones | 2015 | wall paper and vintage illustration cut-outs mounted on board, discarded metal and timber objects, wire, speaker, bent wood, laminex, and recycled baltic pine frame | 92 x 141 x 19cm

Dominic Kavanagh is best known for his site-specific installations, often utilising rubble, old furniture and scrap metals he creates works that inspire a blend of nostalgia and awe.

His wall pieces along with his temporary site-specific works employ elements of assemblage, collage and painting techniques to create striking and complex sculpture. His work over recent years has been conceptually and aesthetically centred on the topic of ruination with a particular focus on the ruins derived from urban environments. Kavanagh methodically engages with and sources his artefacts from urban relics, in the spirit of archaeological endeavour. The collected materials are renegotiated, arranged, and transcended within ruinous landscape installations, which often feature water and sound.

Since relocating from Newcastle N.S.W. to Melbourne in 2007 Dominic has exhibited regularly in solo and curated exhibitions both locally and interstate and has been shortlisted in numerous national art prizes.  Kavanagh’s work is held in several local and interstate collections.
